Calming Anxiety with the Butterfly Hug

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by Anxiety, or if you just can't get your mind to stop racing, the Butterfly Hug is a fantastic grounding technique that works for both adults and kids.

What is the Butterfly Hug?

The Butterfly Hug is a technique that comes from EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a technique that you can use in therapy while talking about distressful thoughts, feelings and events, but it's also something that you can use at home as a calming and grounding technique. You can also use the Butterfly Hug as a support to meditation. For instance, if you slow yourself down and concentrate on a safe space, feel yourself there, noticing the details of the safe space, you can then do the Butterfly Hug taps 6-8 times to really reinforce that feeling of peace and inner calm.

The best part about the Butterfly Hug, is that it also promotes a sense of self-compassion, when you place your hands across your chest. Self-compassion is a critical piece of healing and recovery!
